About the Opportunity

Heiltsuk Tribal Council is looking for a full-time Financial Controller based in Bella Bella, BC.

Reporting to the CEO, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and managing the overall finances of Heiltsuk Tribal Council departments and mentoring the Senior Finance Manager to build capacity.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for analyzing and interpreting financial reports, and working with managers to develop and control annual budgets and long-term financial plans.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing and organizing the Finance department, providing direct support and involvement when necessary
  • Administering the organization's funds according to the approved budget, policies, and Financial Administration Law
  • Ensuring collection of GST refunds and fuel rebates on a regular basis
  • Coordinating the development of operating and capital budgets
  • Preparing reports that outline financial positions in the areas of income and expenses monthly
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and professional organizations, including INAC/DIA and AOFA
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with strategic business partners and other Heiltsuk Tribal Council departments
  • Mentoring and upskilling staff and community members to ensure the long-term financial prosperity of the Nation

About You

To qualify, you will need a CPA or CAFM designation (or be close to completion) with 10+ years of general accounting experience. Experience in Grant Funding and working with a First Nations community or organization will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Experience working with provincial and federal multi-funders, including IAC and CMHC
  • Knowledge of INAC/DIA operations
  • Proficiency in managing accounts payable, receivable, and payroll
  • Expertise in using Xynatax
  • Ability to handle financial complexities with confidence
  • Proven track record in mentoring and upskilling staff, particularly in budgeting
  • Certification through FMB (asset)
  • Skill in developing and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Organizational skills to oversee financial operations with integrity and confidentiality

This is a pivotal role where you will oversee the financial health of the Heiltsuk Tribal Council, ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures, and fostering the long-term prosperity of the Nation. About the Benefits

Compensation based on skills and experience, is a competitive annual salary of $80,000-$120,000, and a host of excellent benefits including:
